Wayne County Kentucky Historical Society Monticello, Kentucky

Among the many attractions around Lake Cumberland is the small town of Monticello, home of the Elizabeth Furr Duncan Library (a genealogy library) and the William Crenshaw Kennedy, Jr. Memorial Museum.

With its rich history, Wayne County supports the largest overshot water wheel mill in the world still in operation, various military monuments, and cemeteries dating back to 1774.

Mission

The Wayne County Historical Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the history of Wayne County, Kentucky. As such, the society operates the Elizabeth Furr Duncan Library, holding many genealogy records, and the William Crenshaw Kennedy, Jr. Memorial Museum, housing artifacts from Wayne County’s past.

Discover your history through genealogy.

The Elizabeth Furr Duncan Library is a genealogy and history library located in the same building as the Wayne County Museum. This library contains thousands of documents and books that make it convenient to trace your Wayne County ancestors. Housed here are census reports, cemetery records, marriage records, deed books, Civil Court records, African American research materials, military records and hundreds of family genealogical histories and stories. The library is staffed with volunteers to assist you in your research.

Experience local history with genuine artifacts.

The William Crenshaw Kennedy, Jr. Memorial Museum houses two Civil War dioramas, a stagecoach, a fully furnished one room school house, military uniforms, and thousands of everyday artifacts unique to local history.

Harlan Ogle, past director of the Wayne County Museum, writes that “the William Crenshaw Kennedy, Jr. Memorial Museum exists because the people of Monticello and Wayne County believe the past has value.

“The Wayne County Historical Society created a ‘Museum Committee’ to establish and operate a historical museum to collect, protect, and display items from the past so that all who are interested in history can learn from the rich legacy our forefathers left us.

“We pride ourselves on being a ‘family friendly’ site and would consider it an honor to have you come and visit our ‘award-winning’ museum.”
